In this assignment, we read Kei Miller’s essay, “The Women Who Carried Pencils Behind Their Ears”. In it, he reflected on genealogy and how it shaped him and his passion for writing. Our prompt was to write about some of the people and experiences that have shaped us and our passions. I chose to write about my mother, life experiences, and the National Museum of African American Culture and History and how they shaped me into who I am today. This project really helped me improve on writing about myself and my experiences.

transformative.

After reading excerpts by James Baldwin and Carmen Kynard where they described language as a means of expression, we were directed to use two outside sources such as a speech or song and show the writers effectiveness in expressing themselves to the reader. For this, I chose to analyze J. Cole’s, "High for hours" and Martin Luther King’s "I Have A Dream Speech" and the parallels between the two. This essays showed me how by adding additional ideas you can help strengthen your connection to the audience and push your point across.
